UOL World University Rankings for Law 2027

Yale University has been ranked the world's leading university for law in the UOL World University Rankings for Law 2027, ahead of the University of Oxford and Harvard University.

The latest UOL World University Rankings for Law places Yale University at number one globally, followed by the University of Oxford in second and Harvard University in third.

The ranking is a new international assessment focused specifically on the strength of universities in law, rather than their overall academic performance.

Yale leads the global ranking

Yale University takes the top position in the first edition of the UOL global law rankings.

Oxford ranks second, making it the highest-ranked university outside the United States and the highest-ranked institution in the United Kingdom.

Harvard University takes third place, followed by the University of Cambridge in fourth and Stanford University in fifth.

The top five therefore comprise three universities from the United States and two from the United Kingdom.

The United States dominates the top 20

American universities account for 11 of the 20 positions in the inaugural UOL global ranking.

Following Yale, Harvard and Stanford in the top five, UC Berkeley ranks sixth, Columbia University seventh, the University of Chicago eighth and New York University ninth.

Georgetown University is ranked eleventh, while Cornell University ranks sixteenth, the University of Pennsylvania nineteenth and Duke University twentieth.

The strong representation reflects the depth and international influence of the American legal education system, particularly in legal scholarship, professional education and the global legal profession.

Oxford leads the UK contingent

The University of Oxford is ranked second globally, with Cambridge fourth and the London School of Economics tenth.

The three UK institutions give Britain three places in the global top 10.

Oxford's second-place position also makes it the highest-ranked European university in the inaugural UOL table.

Global representation beyond the US and UK

The UOL top 20 includes leading institutions from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The University of Melbourne is ranked twelfth, making it the highest-ranked Australian university.

The University of Toronto takes thirteenth place, followed by the University of Tokyo in fourteenth and McGill University in fifteenth.

France is represented by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne at seventeenth, while Leiden University represents the Netherlands at eighteenth.

The distribution reflects UOL's intention to assess law schools on an international basis rather than concentrating exclusively on the traditional Anglo-American legal education centres.

UOL publishes a focused global top 20

For its global edition, UOL has chosen to publish only the world's top 20 universities for law.

The ranking therefore does not assign positions to every university offering a law programme worldwide. Institutions outside the top 20 are not given a numerical position in the inaugural UOL World University Rankings for Law.

The decision creates a deliberately focused table highlighting the institutions UOL considers to have the strongest overall legal ecosystems globally.

A global benchmark for legal education

The UOL World University Rankings for Law 2027 is a international benchmark for law school rankings.

The ranking is intended to provide a dedicated global comparison of universities based on their contribution to legal education, research and the wider legal profession.

With Yale taking the inaugural number-one position, Oxford second and Harvard third, the first UOL table places leading American and British institutions alongside major legal centres from Australia, Canada, Japan, France and the Netherlands.
