Where Lawyers Enjoy the Best Quality of Life in the UK

For a long time, London has been viewed as the place to be if you want a career in law. Big firms, high salaries, and well-known cases have drawn lawyers to the capital for decades. But new research highlights that London may not be the best place for lawyers when it comes to quality of life.
A recent study by Witan Solicitors ranked UK cities based on where lawyers enjoy the best quality of life, taking into account salary, job availability and, most importantly, how much income lawyers actually keep after living expenses.
The research suggests that many lawyers are better off outside London, especially in the North and Midlands.
Why Quality of Life Is Becoming a Bigger Priority for Lawyers
More and more lawyers are starting to rethink what success looks like. Long hours, stress, and burnout are pushing many to look beyond just salary figures, especially younger talent. Last year, The Telegraph reported that many Gen Z lawyers are turning down six-figure salaries in favour of better work-life balance.
Qarrar Somji, Director of Witan Solicitors, told UOLLB that while London still provides strong career credentials and the potential to work on high-profile cases, the reality can be very different once day-to-day living is factored in.
“The long hours, high pressure, and cost of living can make it difficult for many to see a clear path forward,” Qarrar explained.
In recent years, more lawyers have started asking whether the traditional trade-offs are worth it, especially when comparable legal work exists elsewhere in the country.
How the Rankings Were Calculated
The research analysed major UK cities using a weighted scoring system based on:
- Salary – Average annual salary for legal professionals in each city
- Opportunity – Number of job openings available
- Cost of Living – Average rent for a one-bedroom flat
- Disposable Income – Percentage of income left after rent
- Positions Per Capita – Jobs relative to city population size
- Total Score – Weighted combination of the above factors
Salary and job data were sourced from Indeed listings, while rental figures came from the Office for National Statistics

The Worst Cities for Lawyers
1. London
On the opposite end of the scale, London ranks last by a significant margin. - Average Salary: £58,322
- Disposable Income: 67.06%
- Positions Per Capita: 7.94
2. Southend-on-Sea

- Average Salary: £42,174
- Disposable Income: 76.53%
- Positions Per Capita: 7.79
3. Reading

- Average Salary: £56,090
- Disposable Income: 76.64%
- Positions Per Capita: 7.86
4. Crawley
Crawley takes the fourth spot, with high housing costs and limited opportunities keeping it among the least favourable cities for legal professionals, even with competitive salaries.

- Average Salary: £51,902
- Disposable Income: 76.30%
- Positions Per Capita: 8.86
5. Bristol
Despite being a well-established legal centre, Bristol’s rising living costs and limited affordability place it among the lowest-ranked cities for lawyers.
- Total Score: 25.59
- Average Salary: £51,816
- Disposable Income: 73.65%
- Positions Per Capita: 16.20
What This Means for Law Students and Junior Lawyers
The findings challenge the idea that success in law requires working in London. Qarrar explained to UOLLB that many younger lawyers are now thinking long-term, rather than chasing headline salaries.
There has been a shift in priorities. Lawyers are asking whether they can progress, earn well, and still have a life outside work, and in many cases, the answer lies outside the capital.
For students planning training contracts or newly qualified lawyers choosing their next move, regional cities may provide a healthier balance between career progression and personal wellbeing.
Final Thoughts
When it comes down to it, there’s no single “right” place to work as a lawyer. Career goals, practice area, and personal circumstances all matter.
But this research highlights an important reality. High salaries don’t always mean a higher quality of life. For many lawyers, especially those early in their careers, the best opportunities may be found well beyond London’s postcode.
As Qarrar noted to UOLLB, the future of the profession depends on creating environments that attract and retain talent, rather than pushing it away.
