Learning Outcomes of LLB Commercial Law

The learning outcomes of the Commercial Law module are designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, and practices related to commercial law, especially in the context of sales of goods and international transactions. If you complete the module successfully, you should be able to:


Understand the history, concepts, drivers, sources, and debates in commercial law: You should have a deep understanding of the historical development, key concepts, driving forces, sources of law, and major debates in commercial law, both domestically in England and Wales and on an international scale.


Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of sale of goods law: You should be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the legal principles governing the sale of goods in England and Wales, with a particular focus on the Sale of Goods Act 1979, and appreciate the Act's relevance to international sales transactions.


Explain types of international sales transactions and document importance: You should be capable of explaining common international sales transaction types, such as FOB contracts and CIF contracts, and understand the significance and nature of documents like bills of lading in international trade.


Contrast CISG with sale of goods act provisions: You should be able to compare and contrast the key provisions of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) with relevant provisions of the Sale of Goods Act 1979.


Understand legal framework for financing international trade: You should have a solid grasp of the legal framework governing common methods of financing international trade, including documentary credits.


Research and analyse complex legal questions: You should possess strong research skills and the ability to critically analyse complex legal questions and issues related to commercial law.


Articulate well-researched arguments and solutions: You should be able to effectively articulate well-researched arguments and propose solutions to complex legal problems across a range of commercial law issues.


Reflect on learning and identify areas for improvement: You should be able to engage in critical self-reflection, identifying areas for improvement in your understanding of commercial law and your responses to legal issues.


Evaluate legal issues in social, economic, and political context: You should be able to critically evaluate legal issues within the broader context of society, economics, and politics, taking into account policy and doctrinal significance.
