LLB Modules

LLB stands for Legum Baccalaureus in Latin or Bachelor of Laws in English. It is an undergraduate law degree that typically requires two to four years to complete. The LLB modules you will study vary depending on the specific university and programme, but here are some common modules offered by UK universities.


(BAR) This module is required for admission to bar training.

(SQE) This module is assessed in the SQE.

(GDL) You study this module in the GDL or PGDL

(CILEX) You can study this module for the CILEX qualification.


Contract Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module deals with agreements between parties that create legal obligations. It governs the formation, interpretation, and enforcement of contracts, which are legally binding agreements. This module covers topics such as offer and acceptance, consideration, intention to create legal relations, terms of a contract, breach of contract, remedies for breach, and the termination of contracts.


Tort Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module deals with civil wrongs or harms caused by one party to another, which result in legal liability. It covers a wide range of actions such as negligence, defamation, nuisance, trespass, and intentional torts. This module explores the principles of tort liability, including duty of care, standard of care, causation, remoteness, defences, and remedies available to the injured party.


Public Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module focuses on the relationship between individuals and the state or government entities. It encompasses constitutional law, administrative law, and criminal law. This module examines the legal framework for exercising public power, the powers and limitations of governmental bodies, the protection of individual rights, and the legal processes involved in public decision-making.


Property Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module deals with the rights and interests in land and other forms of property. It covers topics such as ownership, possession, transfer, and use of property. This module explores the principles governing property rights, including legal estates, equitable interests, leases, mortgages, easements, and the resolution of property disputes.


Criminal Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module focuses on offences against the state or society. It defines and regulates conduct that is considered harmful, threatening, or detrimental to public order and safety. This module examines the elements of criminal offences, the principles of criminal liability, defences, and the criminal justice system, including the procedures for investigating, prosecuting, and punishing offenders.


Commercial Law (CILEX)

This module deals with legal matters related to business and commerce. It covers areas such as contracts, sales of goods, commercial transactions, company law, and consumer protection. EU Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module refers to the legal system of the European Union and its member states. It governs the relationships between the EU institutions, member states, and individuals within the EU. Company Law (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

It covers topics such as burden of proof, types of evidence, examination of witnesses, hearsay, expert testimony, and the rules of evidence in civil and criminal cases. Equity and Trusts (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module deal with legal principles and doctrines that govern the administration and protection of property and assets held on behalf of others. This module explores the concept of equity, which is a body of principles that supplements and complements the common law. It also covers the law relating to trusts, which are legal arrangements where one party holds and manages assets for the benefit of another. Topics covered may include the creation and types of trusts, trustee duties and liabilities, beneficiary rights, and the remedies available in equity.


Administrative Law

This module deals with the legal framework governing the actions and decisions of administrative agencies and government bodies. Jurisprudence and Legal Theory

This module involves the study and analysis of the philosophical, theoretical, and conceptual aspects of law. This module explores different schools of thought and theories of law, such as natural law, positivism, legal realism, and critical legal studies. It also examines fundamental legal concepts, including justice, rights, morality, and the relationship between law and society.


English Legal System (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module provides an overview of the structure and operation of the legal system in England and Wales. It covers the courts and their jurisdictions, the role of judges and other legal professionals, the sources of law, and the procedures involved in civil and criminal litigation. Wills and Administration of Estates (SQE)

This module focuses on the law relating to wills, succession, and the administration of estates. It covers the formalities and requirements for creating a valid will, the distribution of assets upon death, intestacy (when someone dies without a will), probate procedures, and the rights and obligations of executors and beneficiaries.


Solicitors Accounts and Ethics (SQE)

This module deals with the ethical and professional responsibilities of solicitors, who are legal professionals providing legal advice and representation to clients. It covers professional conduct rules, client confidentiality, conflicts of interest, handling client money, and the regulatory framework for solicitors' practice.


Conflict of Laws

Also known as private international law, this module deals with legal issues that arise in cases involving multiple jurisdictions or legal systems. It covers principles for determining which jurisdiction's laws apply, recognising and enforcing foreign judgments, and resolving conflicts between different legal systems.


International Commercial Law

This module focuses on the legal aspects of cross-border business transactions. It covers topics such as international sale of goods, international contracts, international arbitration, and the regulation of international trade. This module explores the legal framework for conducting business across national boundaries and the resolution of international commercial disputes.


Civil and Criminal Procedure (SQE) (CILEX)

This module modules examine the rules and processes involved in civil and criminal litigation. Civil procedure covers the steps and procedures for initiating and conducting civil lawsuits, including pleadings, discovery, trial, and appeals. Criminal procedure focuses on the stages of criminal prosecution, from investigation and arrest to trial, sentencing, and appeals.


Constitutional Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module focuses on the study of constitutional principles, the protection of fundamental rights, the structure, powers and limitations of government institutions. Trusts Law (BAR) (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module focuses specifically on the principles and rules governing trusts, which are legal arrangements where one party (the trustee) holds and manages assets for the benefit of another (the beneficiary). This module explores the creation and types of trusts, the roles and responsibilities of trustees and beneficiaries, trust administration, and the rights and remedies available to trust parties.


Business Law (SQE) (GDL) (CILEX)

This module, also called Company Law or Corporate Law, focuses specifically on the legal framework and regulations governing the formation, operation, management, and dissolution of companies. It encompasses various legal principles and rules that apply to companies, their shareholders, directors, and other stakeholders. It provides an understanding of the legal framework within which businesses operate and addresses regulatory legal issues commonly encountered in business management.


Criminal Practice (SQE) (CILEX)

This module focuses on the practical aspects of criminal law and procedure. They provide students with an understanding of how criminal cases are handled in practice, including aspects such as client representation, plea bargaining, case preparation, courtroom advocacy, sentencing, and appeals.


Dispute Resolution (SQE) (CILEX)

This module examines various methods of resolving legal disputes outside of traditional court litigation. It covers alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes such as negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. This module explores the advantages and disadvantages of different dispute resolution methods and develops students' skills in resolving conflicts effectively.


Public International Law

It examines the balance between innovation and the public interest, covering key areas such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.


International Protection of Human Rights

This module addresses the international legal mechanisms and frameworks designed to protect human rights globally. It explores the evolution of human rights law, the role of international and regional human rights institutions, and the challenges of enforcing human rights standards worldwide. Agency Law

This module examines the formation of agency relationships, the rights and obligations of principals and agents, the scope of an agent's authority, and the termination of agency relationships.
