How Can Paralegals Qualify as Solicitors Through QWE

Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) offers a transformative pathway to qualification for paralegals and individuals in similar roles, providing them with a more flexible route to becoming solicitors. Unlike the traditional training contract, which often required securing a specific role within a firm, QWE allows a broader range of legal work to count toward qualification. This shift opens up significant opportunities for paralegals who have been gaining valuable experience in legal environments but were previously unable to leverage it toward solicitor qualification.

Under the QWE framework, paralegals who can demonstrate that their work aligns with the competencies required for solicitors can now use this experience as part of their qualification journey. This is a crucial change, as it means that many paralegals already in legal practice may be closer to qualification than they realise. If they successfully pass the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) Stages 1 and 2, their accumulated experience could be recognised as sufficient for qualification as a solicitor. This provides a clear, attainable route to qualification for those who have long been contributing to legal services but were previously limited by the traditional qualification routes.

The new QWE system also requires firms and organisations to reconsider how they manage requests from paralegals and other staff who wish to have their work recognised as QWE. Even organisations that do not currently offer formal training contracts or structured pathways to qualification may now find themselves fielding requests from both current and former employees seeking confirmation of their experience. This includes organisations outside of the traditional law firm model, such as in-house legal teams or other entities providing legal services. As a result, firms will need to establish clear policies on how to assess and confirm QWE requests, ensuring they can accurately verify that the work undertaken meets the necessary standards and competencies.

QWE represents a significant shift toward inclusivity and flexibility in the legal profession. By enabling paralegals to use their practical experience as a stepping stone toward qualification, the new route recognises the value of diverse legal work and allows a wider range of professionals to progress in their careers. This change not only benefits aspiring solicitors but also enriches the profession by attracting talent from varied backgrounds and experiences. For paralegals, QWE could be the key to unlocking new opportunities and achieving the long-desired goal of becoming a qualified solicitor.
