UOL Worldwide Law Modules

As the official UOL Teaching Centre, we are dedicated to facilitating your learning by offering you carefully structured, UOL-approved law notes and learning resources to help you excel in your law exams and beyond. Our study programme is structured across three levels, covering foundational, intermediate, and advanced legal topics. 

UOL Level 4 Modules
The Level 4 modules introduce students to the core principles of law, laying the foundation for advanced study. You will study the following foundational modules:

1. Contract Law: This module focuses on the legal principles governing agreements. Students explore the formation, performance, and termination of contracts, and gain insight into remedies for breach of contract. Key topics include offer and acceptance, consideration, capacity, and the impact of misrepresentation and duress.
2. Criminal Law: Criminal Law examines the principles behind defining crimes, prosecuting offenders, and imposing penalties. Topics include general principles of criminal liability, major offences like homicide and theft, and defences such as insanity and self-defence.
3. Legal System and Methods: This foundational module introduces students to the structure of the English legal system and essential legal research skills. It covers the court hierarchy, legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, and the doctrine of precedent. Students learn how to read cases, analyse legal texts, and construct arguments.
4. Public Law: Public Law deals with the constitutional and administrative framework of government. It covers the separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty, human rights, and judicial review. Students gain insight into how public power is regulated, the role of government institutions, and the protection of individual rights.

UOL Level 5 Modules
Level 5 modules build on the foundational knowledge and delve into more intermediate areas of law. You will study the following intermediate modules:

1. Administrative Law: This module focuses on the control of government power through judicial review, examining how public bodies are held accountable. Students study the grounds for judicial review, procedural fairness, and the protection of fundamental rights.
2. Commercial Law: Commercial Law examines legal principles in business transactions. Topics include sale of goods, agency law, and secured transactions. Students explore issues such as risk transfer, title, and remedies in commercial disputes.
3. Employment Law: Employment Law covers the relationship between employers and employees, focusing on rights and obligations. It examines contract formation, wrongful dismissal, discrimination law, and collective labour rights.
4. EU Law: Despite Brexit, the influence of EU law remains significant in many areas. This module explores the structure and functioning of the European Union, the principles of supremacy and direct effect, and key policy areas like competition law and free movement.
5. Family Law: Family Law explores the legal regulation of family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and domestic violence. Students study the balance between state intervention and individual autonomy in family matters.
6. International Protection of Human Rights: This module delves into the global framework for protecting human rights. Topics include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, international treaties, and the role of regional organisations like the European Court of Human Rights.
7. Property Law: Property Law covers the legal rules governing ownership, transfer, and use of land. Students explore concepts such as estates, co-ownership, leases, and easements, as well as the registration of land interests.
8. Tort Law: Tort Law examines civil wrongs and the principles of liability for causing harm. It covers negligence, occupiers’ liability, nuisance, defamation, and economic torts. Students analyse key cases and explore remedies like damages and injunctions.

UOL Level 6 Modules
The Level 6 modules offer advanced legal studies, focusing on complex areas of law and providing a deeper understanding of the legal system. You will study the following specialised modules:

1. Civil and Criminal Procedure: This module covers the rules and principles governing the conduct of civil and criminal litigation. Topics include the structure of courts, the rules of evidence, pre-trial procedures, and the appeals process.
2. Company Law: Company Law addresses the legal principles regulating companies, from formation to dissolution. Students explore topics such as corporate governance, directors’ duties, shareholders’ rights, and insolvency.
3. Conflict of Laws: Also known as private international law, this module deals with cross-border legal issues, focusing on jurisdiction, the recognition of foreign judgments, and choice of law rules in contractual and non-contractual disputes.
4. Equity and Trusts: This module examines the principles of equity, including fiduciary obligations, and the creation and administration of trusts. Topics include express, resulting, and constructive trusts, as well as equitable remedies like injunctions and specific performance.
5. Evidence: Evidence law focuses on the principles governing the admissibility of evidence in legal proceedings. Key topics include hearsay, burden of proof, witness testimony, and privilege.
6. Intellectual Property: Intellectual Property (IP) law covers the protection of creations of the mind, including copyright, trademarks, patents, and designs. Students explore the balance between encouraging innovation and protecting public interests.
7. Jurisprudence and Legal Theory: This theoretical module introduces students to the philosophy of law. It covers key legal theories such as natural law, legal positivism, and critical legal studies, as well as the work of influential legal philosophers like H.L.A. Hart and Ronald Dworkin.
8. Public International Law: Public International Law addresses the legal rules governing relations between states and international organisations. Topics include the sources of international law, the law of treaties, state responsibility, and the use of force.
