Why Greenland Is Important to the United States

Greenland is far more than a vast, icy island in the North Atlantic but a place of deep strategic significance to the United States. Its importance stems from geography, history, security, resources, and emerging global competition, making Greenland a key piece in U.S. foreign and defence policy, especially amid rising great-power competition and the effects of climate change.
At its most basic level, Greenland’s location gives it immense geopolitical value. The island sits between North America and Europe, near the Arctic Circle, where the Arctic Ocean meets the Atlantic and major sea and air routes converge. This place sits astride the Greenland–Iceland–United Kingdom (GIUK) Gap, a critical naval and aerial chokepoint. During the Cold War, controlling and monitoring this gap was essential to tracking Soviet submarines and aircraft entering the Atlantic. Today, it remains a key vantage point for observing Russian naval activity and securing northern approaches to the United States.
Greenland has hosted an American military presence for decades because of this strategic location. Since the 1951 Defense of Greenland agreement with Denmark, the U.S. has been able to maintain bases on the island, most notably Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base). This installation is a cornerstone of U.S. missile warning and space surveillance networks, feeding critical data into North American Aerospace Defense Command and other defence assets. The ability to detect missile launches early and to track objects in space is vital for U.S. defence strategy, especially as technological competition escalates.
Beyond traditional military concerns, Greenland’s position in the Arctic is becoming ever more important as climate change alters the region. Melting ice is opening new northern shipping routes, reshaping global trade and military calculus alike, while also drawing intensified interest from Russia, China, the United States, and European allies. Control or influence over parts of the Arctic could affect future sea lanes, resource extraction, and security dynamics across the northern hemisphere.
Natural resources further amplify Greenland’s importance. Beneath its ice and tundra lie substantial deposits of rare earth elements and other minerals crucial to modern technologies from renewable energy and electric vehicles to military systems that are in high demand globally. The U.S. sees opportunities in partnering over these resources to reduce reliance on constrained supply chains and to support domestic high-tech industries.
In recent years, Greenland’s rising geopolitical profile has been underlined by renewed American policy debates. Senior U.S. leaders have framed increased engagement and even formal acquisition discussions in terms of countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic and bolstering early-warning defense systems. While many international observers stress that Greenland’s existing defence arrangements with Denmark and NATO already provide robust cooperation, the intensity of current U.S. interest highlights how indispensable Greenland is perceived in broader strategic planning.
In short, Greenland matters to the United States not because it is a prize in itself, but because where it sits and what it offers are crucial in a world where geopolitics, climate change, and technological competition are rapidly evolving. Its geographic position enables strategic defence coverage over the North Atlantic; its infrastructure supports missile warning, space operations, and surveillance; and its natural resources underpin future economic and technological security. For these reasons, Greenland remains a region of enduring importance to U.S. interests.
