UOL UK University Rankings for Law 2027
Share
Oxford has been named the UK’s leading university for law in the latest UOL UK University Rankings for Law 2027, followed by Cambridge and LSE.
The latest UOL UK University Rankings for Law places the University of Oxford at number one, with the University of Cambridge in second place and LSE ranked third.
The ranking provides a new assessment of the UK's leading universities for law, with institutions assessed specifically for their strength in legal education and research rather than their overall university performance.
UOL ranks only the UK's top 20 law schools
Unlike rankings that publish extensive league tables covering dozens of institutions, UOL has chosen to publish only the top 20 universities for law in the United Kingdom.
The decision is intended to make the UOL table a focused ranking of the country's leading law schools rather than a comprehensive listing of every institution offering a law degree.
The UOL UK University Rankings for Law 2027 therefore consists exclusively of 20 institutions. Universities outside the top 20 are not assigned a UOL UK law ranking in this edition.
Oxford leads the inaugural ranking
Oxford's first-place position reflects its strength across legal scholarship, academic reputation, faculty depth, teaching and the wider influence of its law graduates.
Cambridge follows in second place. The two universities form the top two positions of the inaugural UOL league table, reflecting their longstanding importance in British legal education and scholarship.
LSE, ranked third, provides a distinctive profile through the integration of law with economics, politics, international affairs and the social sciences.
London remains a major centre for legal education
London has four institutions in the UOL top 20, including three in the top nine.
King’s College London ranks fourth, followed by UCL in fifth. Queen Mary University of London ranks ninth.
The concentration of highly ranked institutions in London reflects the capital's importance as a centre for the legal profession, international arbitration, financial services, government, regulation and legal scholarship.
Strong representation from across the UK
The ranking also highlights the geographical breadth of leading legal education across the United Kingdom.
Durham ranks sixth, followed by Warwick in seventh and Nottingham in eighth. Glasgow is the highest-ranked Scottish institution at tenth, with the University of Edinburgh in eleventh.
Birmingham ranks twelfth, while Exeter takes thirteenth and Liverpool fourteenth.
The University of Bristol ranks fifteenth, followed by York, Lancaster, Manchester and Sheffield.
Queen’s University Belfast completes the top 20.

A new addition to the global rankings landscape
The UK table forms part of the wider UOL World University Rankings for Law 2027, which assesses universities internationally.
As with the UK table, UOL's approach is intended to provide a focused assessment of leading institutions rather than simply reproduce existing university league tables.
The UOL rankings are intended to provide a dedicated assessment of legal education and research, with future editions expected to track changes in university performance and the evolving demands of the legal profession.
