Eligibility of Foreign Qualification for US Bar Exam

Eligibility of Foreign Qualification for US Bar Exam

Foreign law graduates who wish to take the US bar exam must meet certain eligibility and requirements in order to be admitted to practice law in the United States. Here are the general requirements:

Eligibility: The eligibility requirements for foreign law graduates vary depending on the state where they plan to take the bar exam. Generally, applicants must have a law degree from an accredited institution and must have completed a certain number of credit hours on campus in certain legal subjects. If you study for your common law degree full-time on campus for 3 years, you are likely eligible.

Evaluation of foreign credentials: Applicants must have their foreign law degree evaluated by a credential evaluation service to determine whether it meets the requirements for admission to the bar in the state where they plan to practice law.

Additional requirements: Some states may have additional requirements for foreign law graduates, such as completion of an LLM from an ABA-approved law school, or completion of a certain number of hours of legal work under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

It is important for foreign law graduates to research the specific eligibility and requirements for the state where they plan to practice law, as they may vary from state to state.
