New York Law Course

New York Law Course

The New York Law Course (NYLC) is a requirement for admission to the New York State Bar. It is an online course that covers New York-specific legal topics, including ethics, professionalism, and skills needed for practicing law in New York.

The NYLC is offered by the New York State Board of Law Examiners and is designed to be completed before taking the New York Law Exam (NYLE), which is also required for admission to the New York State Bar. The NYLC and NYLE replaced the former New York State bar exam essay portion, effective October 2020.

The NYLC consists of approximately 15 hours of online lectures, interactive exercises, and assessments. It is self-paced, so candidates can complete it at their own convenience, but it must be completed within one year of registering for the course.

After completing the NYLC, candidates must take and pass the NYLE, which is a two-hour, open-book, multiple-choice exam. The NYLE covers material from the NYLC, as well as other New York-specific legal topics.

The NYLC and NYLE are designed to ensure that lawyers who are admitted to the New York State Bar have a solid understanding of New York-specific legal topics and are prepared to practise law in New York.
