Graduate Diploma in International Law (UOL International Programme)

The Graduate Diploma (GradDip) in International Law is a legal qualification that provides an in-depth understanding of various aspects of international law. This diploma is designed for those seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in international legal frameworks, policies, and practices. The programme is structured around four key modules, each focusing on a distinct area of international law. These modules are International Commercial Law, International Human Rights Law, Private International Law, and Public International Law.

International Commercial Law

This module focuses on the laws and regulations governing international trade and commercial transactions. It covers a wide range of topics, including international sales of goods, payment methods, trade finance, commercial arbitration, and dispute resolution. The module aims to equip students with an understanding of how international commercial transactions are conducted and regulated, as well as the skills to navigate and resolve disputes arising from such transactions. Key conventions and treaties, such as the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), are also studied.

International Human Rights Law

International Human Rights Law is dedicated to the study of rights and principles designed to protect individuals and groups against actions and omissions, primarily by state actors, that interfere with fundamental freedoms and human dignity. This module covers the evolution of international human rights laws, the legal instruments and bodies established to protect human rights (such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenants on Human Rights), and the mechanisms for their enforcement. Students will explore various human rights issues, including civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights, and the rights of vulnerable groups such as refugees, women, and indigenous peoples.

Private International Law

Also known as conflict of laws, this module deals with legal disputes that involve foreign elements, such as cases where the parties are from different countries or the legal issues span multiple jurisdictions. The module covers the principles used to determine the applicable law and the jurisdiction in which disputes should be resolved. Topics may include international jurisdiction issues, choice of law rules, recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, and international family law. The goal is to provide students with the tools to address complex legal issues that arise in cross-border personal, family, and contractual relationships.

Public International Law

This module provides a comprehensive overview of the legal rules and principles that govern the relations between sovereign states and other international actors, such as international organisations and, in certain cases, individuals. Topics covered include the sources of international law (treaties, customary international law, general principles), the law of treaties, international dispute resolution, state sovereignty, jurisdiction, and immunity, the use of force, international humanitarian law, and the protection of the environment. The module aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of the framework of international law that underpins international relations and global governance.

The GradDip International Law provides a thorough grounding in the essential areas of international law, enabling graduates to navigate the complexities of legal practices on a global scale. Each of these modules plays a crucial role in providing students with a holistic understanding of international law, preparing them for careers in legal practice, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, or academia. This programme not only enhances legal expertise but also promotes a more just, equitable, and peaceful global society through the rule of law.'
