Is Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law Right for You?

The Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (CertHE) is designed for anyone who wishes to study law but does not have the required qualification for admission to an LLB programme. You will study the same first year modules with LLB students. This qualification also serves as an exit qualification for those who can pass the four compulsory modules but fail to graduate with the LLB degree.

This certificate programme provides an opportunity for individuals to study common law principles and gain a solid foundation in legal studies. You will study the following four modules:

Contract Law

This module provides an introduction to the principles of contract law. It covers both common law and equity, exploring how these principles are applied to agreements. You will learn about the formation of contracts, the elements of a valid contract, contractual terms, and remedies for breach of contract.

Criminal Law

This module examines the general principles of criminal liability. It delves into a range of fatal and non-fatal offences against the person, such as murder, manslaughter, assault, and battery. Additionally, selected offences against property, like theft and fraud, are explored. You will study the elements of criminal offences, defences, and the principles of criminal liability.

Legal System and Method

This module introduces you to the English legal system. It covers the structure of the legal system, the roles of key legal institutions, and the sources of law in England and Wales. Additionally, it focuses on the common law approach as a legal methodology, emphasising its distinctive features and analytical techniques used in legal reasoning and decision-making.

Public Law

This module centres around constitutional issues and reform. It analyses key aspects of public law, including the separation of powers, the rule of law, and human rights. It also explores the relationship between citizens and the state, examining topics such as administrative law, judicial review, and constitutional reforms. This module provides insights into the legal framework that governs the exercise of public power.

These modules collectively provide a solid foundation in common law principles and legal studies. Upon successful completion of this programme, you can move on to the second year of the LLB and complete the remaining modules for the law degree.
