Learning Outcomes of LLB Dissertation

The learning outcomes of the Dissertation module are designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to conduct independent research and produce a substantial piece of academic work. If you complete the module successfully, you should be able to:


Identify a research topic and write a research proposal: You should be able to select a research topic, formulate research questions, and write a research proposal outlining the scope, objectives, and methodology of your research.


Explain the methodological basis of research: You should be capable of explaining the methodological basis employed in your research, demonstrating your understanding of the chosen research methods and your suitability for the research objectives.


Demonstrate technical proficiency in data acquisition and analysis: You should be able to demonstrate technical proficiency in collecting and analysing data, utilising appropriate research techniques and tools.


Plan, structure, and write a dissertation: You should be able to plan and structure a 10,000-word dissertation effectively, including crafting a clear introduction, literature review, methodology section, results or findings section, discussion, and conclusions.


Identify and employ primary and secondary sources: You should be able to identify and use a broad range of primary and secondary sources that are relevant to your research topic, showcasing your ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews.


Assess arguments in primary sources against secondary studies: You should have the ability to assess and critically evaluate the arguments presented in primary source materials in the context of relevant secondary studies, demonstrating your analytical skills.


Critically evaluate different interpretations: You should be able to critically evaluate different interpretations of your research topic, considering varying perspectives and arguments presented in the literature.


Synthesise doctrinal and policy issues: You should be able to synthesise relevant doctrinal (legal) and policy issues related to your research topic, demonstrating your ability to connect theoretical and practical aspects.


Construct clear and analytical conclusions: You should have the ability to construct clear, logically structured, analytical, and independently argued conclusions in your dissertation, summarising the findings and their implications.


Plan and manage your own learning: You should be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and manage your own learning throughout the research process, including time management, resource allocation, and problem-solving.


These learning outcomes aim to prepare you for independent research and academic writing, equipping you with the skills required to conduct in-depth research, critically analyse existing literature, and contribute to your field of study through the production of a high-quality dissertation.
