Regulation of Legal Personnel

Regulation of Legal Personnel

Legal personnel, including barristers, solicitors, and legal executives, are regulated by different professional bodies. These professional bodies set the standards of conduct and practice for their members, and ensure that they meet those standards.

Barristers

Barristers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board (BSB), which is responsible for setting the standards of conduct and practice for barristers, as well as ensuring that barristers meet those standards. The BSB also regulates barrister training, approves education and training providers, and sets and enforces professional standards.

Solicitors

Solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), which is responsible for regulating solicitors and law firms in England and Wales. The SRA sets and enforces standards of conduct and practice for solicitors, as well as overseeing their training and education. It also regulates law firms and alternative business structures (ABS) that provide legal services.

Legal Executives

Legal executives are regulated by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx), which is responsible for setting and enforcing standards of conduct and practice for legal executives. The CILEx also regulates legal executive training and education, approves education and training providers, and sets and enforces professional standards.

The regulation of legal personnel is an important part of ensuring that the legal profession operates in a fair and ethical manner, and that clients receive high-quality legal services from qualified professionals. The regulatory bodies and other oversight organisations play a crucial role in maintaining public trust in the legal system and upholding the integrity of the legal profession.
