Conflict of Laws

This optional module, also known as private international law, deals with legal issues that arise when a case involves elements from different legal systems or jurisdictions. You study principles for determining jurisdiction, choice of law, and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. You also examine conflicts between legal systems, evaluate applicable laws in cross-border disputes, and explore mechanisms for resolving conflicts.


Criminology

This optional modules examines the causes and consequences of crime, as well as the criminal justice system. You explore criminological theories that explain criminal behaviour, analyse crime trends, and critically evaluate the effectiveness of criminal justice policies and practices. You also examine topics such as the social construction of crime, punishment and rehabilitation, and the role of law enforcement and courts in addressing crime.


Dissertation

The Dissertation module provides you with the opportunity to undertake an independent research project on a legal topic of their choice. Under the guidance of your supervisor, you plan, research, and write a 10,000-word dissertation. You also engage in in-depth analysis, apply legal research methods, and demonstrate critical thinking and scholarly writing skills.


Equity and Trusts

This optional modules focuses on the principles and rules governing trusts, which are legal arrangements for holding and managing property. You study topics such as the creation and administration of trusts, fiduciary duties, equitable remedies, and the interplay between equity and common law. You also explore the historical development of equity, analyse key cases, and examine the role of trusts in various contexts.


Evidence

This optional module examines the rules and principles governing the admissibility and presentation of evidence in legal proceedings. You learn about the roles of lawyers, judges, and juries in assessing and evaluating evidence. You study topics such as burden of proof, types of evidence, rules of admissibility, witness testimony, expert evidence, and the use of technology in the courtroom. You also analyse the ethical considerations related to the presentation and use of evidence.


Intellectual Property

This optional module explores the legal protection of intellectual creations, such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and designs. You study the laws and principles governing intellectual property rights, as well as the societal and economic considerations involved. You also examine topics such as the requirements for obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights, the balance between protection and innovation, and the challenges posed by emerging technologies.


Introduction to Islamic Law

This optional module provides an overview of Islamic legal principles, sources of law, and their application in contemporary legal systems. You examine the historical development of Islamic law, its religious and ethical foundations, and its interaction with modern legal frameworks. You also explore topics such as family law, contracts, criminal law, and the role of Islamic law in different jurisdictions.


Public International Law

This optional module focuses on the legal principles and rules governing relations between states. You explore topics such as state sovereignty, international organisations, diplomatic relations, the use of force, and the protection of human rights. You also examine the role of treaties, customary international law, and international courts in the resolution of disputes and the promotion of global cooperation.
