The European External Action Service (EEAS) is the diplomatic service and foreign policy arm of the European Union (EU). It was established in 2010 as part of the Treaty of Lisbon, which reformed the EU's institutions and governance.
The EEAS is responsible for developing and implementing the EU's foreign and security policy, including promoting the EU's values and interests in the world, conducting diplomatic relations with third countries and international organisations, and managing the EU's crisis response and conflict prevention activities.
The EEAS works closely with the diplomatic services of the EU member states, as well as with other EU institutions such as the European Commission and the European Parliament. It is headed by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who also serves as the Vice-President of the European Commission.
The EEAS operates through a network of EU delegations and embassies around the world, which provide on-the-ground support for the EU's foreign policy objectives. It also works closely with other international organisations, such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, to promote multilateral cooperation and address global challenges.
