Level 4 LLB Modules

The first year consists of Level 4 modules, which serve as the foundational courses for the study of law. These modules provide students with a broad understanding of key legal principles and concepts across various areas of law. Here is an overview of each module:

Contract Law

This compulsory module provides an introduction to the principles of contract law both in common law and equity. It aims to develop your understanding of how these principles are applied to various agreements. You will study topics such as the formation of contracts, terms and conditions, vitiating factors (such as mistake, misrepresentation, duress), discharge of contracts, and remedies for breach of contract. Through this module, you will gain a solid foundation in contract law principles and their practical application.

Criminal Law

This compulsory module focuses on the general principles of criminal liability. It explores the elements of criminal offences and examines a range of fatal and non-fatal offences against the person (such as murder, manslaughter, assault) as well as selected offences against property (such as theft, burglary). You will study the definitions of crimes, the elements required for establishing criminal liability, and the defences available in criminal cases, such as insanity and self-defence. This module provides an understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of criminal law.

Legal System and Method

This compulsory module introduces you to the English legal system and imparts an understanding of its distinctive features. It explores the organisation and structure of the legal system, including the roles of various legal institutions and personnel. Additionally, it familiarises you with legal research skills, legal reasoning, and the methodology of the common law approach. This module lays the foundation for comprehending the English legal system and equips you with essential legal research and analytical skills.

Public Law

This compulsory module concentrates on constitutional issues and reforms, examining the key aspects governing the relationship between citizens and the state. It covers topics such as the separation of powers, the rule of law, constitutional conventions, human rights, judicial review, and administrative law. By studying public law, you will gain an understanding of the legal principles that shape the relationship between individuals and the government, and the legal mechanisms for holding public authorities accountable.
